Stories
We have a busy day ahead of us, my fine Farmington Rotary friends. It's the first Thursday of a month during the school year, which means we will once again recognize a group of senior citizens for their contributions to their schools and their community. I'm sure they'll tell us about all the wonderful things they do, and I'm sure it will all be fascinating. But we may have to cut them off at some point. Not because we don't admire them, but because....
AFTER we hear from our Students and Senior Citizen of the Month we're going to wrap the gifts we bought for the 360 Communities Armful of Love program. A team of your fellow Rotarians did some shopping late last month (or at least pushed a cart around Target and made plans to buy things online) so now we just have to get everything wrapped and ready to go. We need several hands that are good at folding things in a straight line. We'd like to get things done quickly because....
AFTER we're done wrapping gifts we're holding the board meeting we would under ordinary circumstances hold next week. It's being moved because next week's meeting will be dedicated to our annual senior holiday luncheon. We're going to approve a budget (at the meeting. Not the luncheon. That would be weird) so it ought to be fascinating.
You might remember somebody telling you recently that the Ramble Jam Committee planned to move its meetings to the first Thursday of the month, to be held immediately after the club meeting. Well, about that.
Because this month's board meeting is moving from Dec. 10 to today, our December Ramble Jam committee meeting is moving from today to Dec. 17. It's like a big game of musical chairs, only everybody gets a chair as long as they want to sit in on a board meeting or talk about Ramble Jam bands.
Future Ramble Jam committee meetings will in fact take place following the first club meeting of the month. Honest.
As mentioned previously, next week's meeting will be given over to our annual senior holiday luncheon, which will take place at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
The actual meal begins at 11:30 (I think) but seniors often can't be bothered to wait for things like official start times. They will show up early, so anybody who is able to show up early to help is welcome. Anybody who can come extra early to help set up is even more welcome. And if you can stay to help clean up? Well, then you might have just earned yourself a firm handshake and possibly a pat on the shoulder, my friend. And you will have earned it.
The shopping's done. The wrapping will happen today. But there is a third part to Farmington Rotary's involvement in Armful of Love (Well, four if you count just straight-up giving them money, but let's simplify, OK?): The volunteering.
Our club has been signed up for a shift from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11. We need at least eight people to fulfill our obligation, so your presence would be much appreciated. I mean, your presence would probably be appreciated anyway because of your wit and good looks, but this time it will also be appreciated in a help-us-not-look-like-chumps way.
It will be our job to distribute gifts to the families that come in to receive them. It's pretty rewarding.
Distribution will take place at 2300 West Highway 13 in Burnsville, next to Menards. It's the shopjimmy.com warehouse.
Anika has asked me tell you wear comfortable shoes and bring warm coat/hat/gloves. But, you know what? She's not the boss of you. If you want to wear stilettos and a mesh tank top to carry gifts out to people's cars, then who is she to tell you no?
Anyway, if you can take part you should probably let Anika know.
