Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that seeps up from the earth. When inhaled, it gives off radioactive particles that can damage the cells that line the lung. Long term exposure to radon can lead to lung cancer.
We'll top off our February meetings as we hear from Scott Arcand, radon program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Health, about radon in Minnesota and what we can do to protect our homes and families from it. As always, guests are welcome and we meet at noon at Celt's in downtown Farmington.
Farmington Rotary's March 1 meeting will once again honor some worthy Farmington youth during our monthly students-of-the-month recognition. Cole Stansbury from Farmington High School and Jacob Traynor from Farmington Elementary School are our honorees.
Join us at noon at Celt's in downtown Farmington to hear how these amazing young people so generously give of their time and talents and live out the Rotary motto of putting Service Above Self. Guests are encouraged to attend this inspiring meeting.
Who doesn't love a good inaugural event, right? Especially when food, fun and fellowship are involved.
Thanks to Kyle Anderson, Farmington Rotary kicks off our new 501 Club on Thursday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. at Bourbon Butcher in Farmington. This is strictly a social event, a time to enjoy each other's company and get to know each other on a more personal basis.
I'm sure you have lots of questions about this. Read on to get your questions addressed.
Q: If it's a 501 club, why are we starting at 5:30?
A: Because Kyle said so.
Q: Who's paying for my food and drinks?
A: You are.
Q: Can I count this towards my weekly attendance?
A: Of course!
Q: Who will attend?
A: You and your fellow Rotarians.
Q: Can I bring a guest?
A: Of course! We would love to meet him or her.
Q: Do I need to preregister?
A: Nope – just show up!
Q: How long will it last?
A: Gosh, that's a good question. I suppose until the last Rotarian leaves.
Q: How often will the 501 Club meet?
A: Hmmm. That's another good question. Monthly, perhaps? Stay tuned...
Q: Who can I contact for more information, especially since Linda's Q&A is kind of lame?
Oh what a meeting it was! If you missed last week's club assembly meeting, then you missed it. Too bad for you.
But I will share one piece of information resulting from that meeting. The club voted on the board of directors for the 2018-2019 Rotary year and unanimously elected the following Rortarians as your fearless leaders. Please thank them for saying yes when they were asked to serve.

I didn't take notes at the meeting so am operating here strictly from memory. And as anyone who knows me can tell you, that's dangerous. It's entirely possible I got something wrong. In the whole scheme of things, what could be more important that spending an hour a week with those who love you best - your fellow Farmington Rotarians? But wait! Now there is yet another reason to attend Rotary meetings!
That reason is an attendance contest. But you have to sign in on the attendance sheet in order to enter to win, so don't forget! And remember, any Rotary function counts: committee meetings, service projects, district events and other Rotary efforts. Sign in to win!

Do you ever feel like you're inadvertently watching one of those annoying infomercials on TV?
We all dream of being Irish for day, right? Especially around St. Patrick's Day. Because what's more fun than green beer? Well, probably drinking it with your fellow Rotarians while supporting another Rotary club.
And it's not just any Rotary club. It's the Rosemount Rotary Club. Some of you might not be aware that Farmington Rotary sponsored the Rosemount club when they were getting started, and their Irish for a Day Soiree is the annual fundraiser responsible for financing their service projects throughout the year. And we are responsible for supporting them.
This year's Soiree is March 15 from 5:30-11 p.m. at the Rosemount Community Center. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased here.
Seriously. This event is so much fun. Don't miss it!
For the thirty-third year, 360 Communities will bring together law enforcement, elected officials, members of the violence prevention movement and concerned citizens to stand up and say, "No More" to domestic and sexual violence. More than 300 people are expected to attend this years' luncheon, titled Prevention: let's start with our youth.
The cost is $30 and the luncheon does sell out, so register now.
Mark your calendars for this oldest of Farmington Rotary service projects; roadside cleanup.
Farmington Rotary is the official adopter of a 2-mile stretch of Pilot Knob Road from County Road 50 north to the Farmington Maintenance Facility, which is where we'll meet on Sat., April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon for our annual spring cleanup. The rain date is May 19 – same time, same place.
Bring gloves! We've come across some things no one should ever touch. Also bring your friends and family. Farmington Rotary doesn't discriminate when there is work to be done! As our grandmothers used to say, many hands makes light work.
The spring Conference of Clubs (formerly known as the District Conference) will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 19-20, at the new Mystic Conference Center, part of the Mystic Lake Hotel and Casino complex, in Prior Lake. See attached brochure for more information on what is planned.
It's April and it's STILL snowing. And Jay and Tom are STILL our meeting hosts for the month – not that that is a bad thing, mind you. Annie, Kyle A., Kyle H. and TJ are up in May as meeting hosts, along with the promised spring flowers. Jamie and Steve then round out the 2017-2018 Rotary year as meeting hosts in June.
